I didn't know who Fred was or his legendary history when I played on some commercial jingle sessions for Keller & Cohen in the late '90s, but one playback is all I needed to know how accurate his ear was. Fred got a million-dollar sound for my mandolin...the best it was ever recorded, and the same for the little bit of banjo and dobro the commercials required. I still remember his careful mic placement and the way he cocked his head as he listened to the natural tone of my instruments. It only took him a few seconds of setup to get it absolutely right.
